About me

I’m Matt Donaldson, I’m 35, and I live in Christchurch. I review online casinos for New Zealand players, with a focus on the details that determine whether a site is straightforward to use: clear terms, working games, sensible account controls, useful support and a fair process when something goes wrong.

I start with the player journey. Can you find the important conditions before registering? Does the site work properly on mobile? Are limits and safer-gambling tools easy to reach? Does support answer the question that was actually asked? These small checks often reveal more than a long feature list.

My background

  • 2010 to 2012: Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Information Systems, at the University of Canterbury. The course gave me a grounding in business processes, digital systems and the way people interact with online services.
  • 2013 to 2016: Content coordinator for a Christchurch digital comparison publisher. I checked product information, corrected outdated claims and turned customer questions into clearer guides.
  • 2016 to 2020: Digital content editor for an ecommerce and subscription business. My work covered sign-up journeys, account pages, customer support content and usability checks across desktop and mobile.
  • 2020 to 2024: Freelance reviewer and editorial quality specialist. I developed repeatable test notes for digital products, separating first-hand observations from information supplied by companies.
  • Since 2024: Editor and casino tester for this site, covering online casinos available to New Zealand players, game libraries, bonus terms, support, account controls and withdrawals.

That background shapes the way I review a casino. I look for the point where a clear promise becomes an unclear condition, or where a polished homepage leads to a frustrating account experience.

How I review a casino

Every review starts with a written test record. Depending on the scope of the review, I may check registration, identity verification, the mobile experience, lobby navigation, game search, bonus terms, customer support, responsible-gambling controls, deposits and withdrawals.

I record what happened, when it happened and which device, method or account state was involved. If I did not test something, I do not write as though I did. Information taken from an operator’s terms or support team is identified as such, and time-sensitive details are checked again before publication.

A useful review should tell you what happened in the test, what came from the operator’s terms, and what still remains unconfirmed.

How I score casinos

I score each category in whole points, using only the results recorded during the test. I do not use half points, estimate a result from advertising or award a score for something I did not check. When there is no direct observation for a category, I mark it Not tested. The note beside each score explains the result that earned it.

What I look at

  • Player safety and trust: who operates the casino, its current regulatory status, identity checks, complaints process and account controls.
  • Games and usability: lobby navigation, search and filters, mobile performance, providers and games that fail to load.
  • Bonuses and terms: wagering requirements, expiry dates, game restrictions and limits that materially affect the offer.
  • Support: response time, clarity and whether the answer addresses the question asked.
  • Banking and withdrawals: available methods, limits, fees and the outcome of any payment test recorded for the review.
  • Safer gambling: access to deposit and spend limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and clear help information.

New Zealand context

New Zealand’s online casino framework is changing. The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 is in force, while the Department of Internal Affairs is introducing the licensing system in stages. I distinguish between a casino being available in New Zealand, being allowed to operate during the transition, applying for a licence and actually holding a New Zealand licence.

I check current information from the Department of Internal Affairs before making a regulatory claim. An overseas licence, acceptance of NZD or access from a New Zealand internet connection is not presented as proof of a New Zealand licence.

What I can’t help with

  • I’m not a lawyer and cannot give binding advice about a licence, contract or dispute.
  • I’m not an accountant and cannot give personal tax advice about gambling winnings.
  • I do not provide financial advice or tell anyone how much to gamble.
  • I do not promise winnings or present a betting system as a way to beat a random game.
  • I’m not an addiction counsellor. If gambling is becoming difficult to control, contact the Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 655 or text 8006 for confidential support.

Contact

If you find an outdated term, a game that no longer works as described or a material difference between a review and the current casino site, send the page URL, the date and the relevant wording or screenshot. I will check the report against the current source and update the page when the change is confirmed.
