If you want help now, rather than an article: Gambling Helpline 0800 654 655, or free text 8006. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day, run by Whakarongorau Aotearoa. You can also talk to someone about a friend’s or a family member’s gambling on the same number.
The rest of this page is about something narrower and less often written down: which control tools actually exist for a New Zealander playing online in 2026, which of them work across more than one casino, and which of the protections people assume are in place are not in place yet. Checked 25 September 2026.

The protection New Zealand does not have yet
Ask most people how self exclusion works and they will describe a register: you sign up once and you are locked out everywhere. That exists in several countries. It does not exist here for online casinos.
New Zealand has no centralised self exclusion register for online gambling. The Online Casino Gambling Regulations 2026 require regulations establishing one to be recommended by 1 December 2027, which means the earliest a national register could be operating is well after the first licences are issued. Until then, self exclusion is arranged one casino at a time, by asking that casino.
The mandatory tool requirements have the same timing problem. Licensed operators will have to provide time, deposit and spend limits and self exclusion. Transitional providers, which is every operator serving New Zealand today, are bound by the Act but not by Parts 2, 3 and 4 of the Regulations, the parts covering harm prevention and consumer protection. Whatever tools they offer right now, they offer voluntarily.
The cross operator route most people have not heard of
There is one exception worth knowing about, and it covers a large share of the brands New Zealanders actually see.
Jackpot City, Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune, Royal Vegas, Gaming Club, Platinum Play and Lucky Nugget are all operated by Baytree Interactive Ltd, a Guernsey company, on a single Kahnawake Gaming Commission permit, number 01059. The Kahnawake Gaming Commission runs a Comprehensive Self Exclusion Request that applies not to one site but to every interactive gaming site it licenses.
You submit one form with photo identification to the Commission at [email protected]. Once verified, you are excluded from all of its licensed sites at once. Read the terms carefully before you do, because they are severe by design:
- The exclusion is permanent and irrevocable. There is no cooling off and no route back.
- If you breach it, any funds you deposit or win are forfeited to a charity chosen by the Commission.
- The Commission states plainly that it accepts no responsibility for losses before or after the exclusion takes effect.
The Commission’s own 2025 figures say something honest about how this goes in practice. It received 810 self exclusion inquiries during the year. It issued 234 self exclusion directives. In 544 cases there was no further action because the person who made the inquiry never supplied the additional information needed to complete it.
Two out of three people who reached out did not finish the form. If you decide this is the right step, set aside the twenty minutes and your identification and finish it in one sitting, because the evidence says that is where it falls over.
What the operators themselves offer
Reading the safer gambling pages at Jackpot City and Spin Casino on 25 September 2026, both Baytree brands, the tools are identical, which is what you would expect from one company running seven sites.
| Tool | How it works | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limits | Daily, weekly or monthly. If you set more than one, the lowest applies | Set in the Bank or Banking area of the account |
| Lowering a limit | Takes effect immediately | None. This is the asymmetry to use |
| Raising a limit | Requires a 24 hour waiting period | Deliberate friction, and it works |
| Take a break | Cooling off period of at least 24 hours | Must be requested through support, not toggled in the account |
| Self exclusion | Six months or longer. No login, no play, marketing stopped | Also arranged by contacting support |
The 24 hour delay on increases is the single most useful feature in that table. A limit you can raise instantly is a suggestion. A limit that takes a day to raise gives the impulse time to pass, which is the whole point of setting one.
The catch worth naming is that neither the break nor the self exclusion is a button. Both require contacting the help centre. At the moment somebody most wants to stop, the design asks them to start a conversation with the company they are trying to stop giving money to.
Something missing from those pages
Both sites offer a New Zealand option in their language and region menu. Both list organisations to contact for help. On 25 September 2026 those lists named Gordon Moody Gambling Therapy, the Responsible Gambling Council and Gamblers Anonymous.
Gordon Moody is a British charity. The Responsible Gambling Council is Canadian. Gamblers Anonymous is international. Not one New Zealand service appeared on either page. No Gambling Helpline number, no Safer Gambling Aotearoa, no Problem Gambling Foundation, on sites that will happily set themselves to New Zealand and take deposits in New Zealand dollars.
That is not unlawful today, because the harm minimisation regulations do not yet bind transitional providers. It is a fair measure of how localised a site really is. A casino that localises its currency and its greeting but not its crisis line has told you which of those it considers important.
Recognising when it has stopped being a hobby
Both operators run a nine question self test. It is worth recognising what it is: those nine questions are the Problem Gambling Severity Index, a standard screening tool used by clinicians, not something the marketing team invented. Taking it on a casino site or on a health service site gives the same result.
The questions ask whether, in the last twelve months, you have bet more than you could afford to lose, needed to bet larger amounts to get the same excitement, gone back another day to win back losses, borrowed money or sold anything to gamble, felt you might have a problem, been criticised for your betting, felt guilty, had health problems including stress or anxiety, or caused financial problems for yourself or your household.
Answering anything other than never to several of those is worth a phone call to 0800 654 655. It is a conversation, not a commitment.
Practical steps that actually hold
- Set the deposit limit before the first deposit, not after a bad night. Setting it while calm is the version that reflects what you can afford.
- Use the asymmetry. Lowering is instant, raising takes 24 hours. Set the limit slightly lower than you think you need, because tightening it costs nothing and loosening it costs a day.
- Never deposit on credit. Credit cards and buy now pay later will be prohibited for licensed operators once the regime is live, and the reason is sound now. Note that an overdraft or a revolving credit facility on your own account will not be caught by that rule, because the casino cannot see it. Your bank can, and can block gambling transactions on request.
- Install a blocker rather than relying on willpower. BetBlocker is free and covers multiple devices. It is a different kind of protection from self exclusion, because it does not depend on any operator agreeing to anything.
- Keep the money separate. A dedicated account, funded deliberately, makes the total visible. Gambling spread across a main account is very hard to add up, which is exactly why it feels smaller than it is.
- Treat a bonus as a reason for caution, not comfort. Wagering requirements are the mechanism that keeps a session going after it would otherwise have ended. The arithmetic is set out on casino bonuses.
If a limit fails
If you set a deposit or play limit and the site lets you exceed it, that is not a technical annoyance, it is a breach of the operator’s own licence conditions. The Kahnawake Gaming Commission asks to be told immediately so it can act. For a site licensed elsewhere the equivalent complaint goes to that regulator, and the routes are listed on how to complain about an online casino.
Keep a screenshot of the limit as it was set, with the date. Without it you are describing a setting nobody else can see.
Where this fits with the law
Almost everything on this page is shaped by timing. The rules that will require limits, ban autoplay and ban credit have been written, and they do not bind anyone serving New Zealand today. The register that would make self exclusion national is not due to be recommended until 1 December 2027. The full sequence, and what changes on 1 December 2026, is on New Zealand online casino law.
Until that arrives, the protections that work are the ones you arrange yourself: a limit set before you play, a blocker that does not need anyone’s permission, a separate account, and a phone number you are willing to use.
Is there a national self exclusion register for online casinos in New Zealand?
No. Regulations establishing a centralised self exclusion register are to be recommended by 1 December 2027. Until then, self exclusion from an online casino is arranged with that casino individually, or, for sites under one licence body, through that body.
How do I self exclude from several casinos at once?
If the sites share a licence, the licence body may be able to do it. The Kahnawake Gaming Commission operates a Comprehensive Self Exclusion Request covering every interactive site it licenses, which includes Jackpot City, Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune, Royal Vegas, Gaming Club, Platinum Play and Lucky Nugget. It is permanent and irrevocable, and requires a completed form with photo identification sent to [email protected].
Can a casino stop me self excluding?
In practice the friction is procedural rather than a refusal. At both Baytree brands checked, a break or an exclusion is requested through the help centre instead of being set in the account. If a request is ignored or refused, that is a matter for the licence body, and worth raising with a written record of when you asked.
Does self exclusion get my money back?
No. Self exclusion stops future play. It is not a refund mechanism and it does not reverse losses. The Kahnawake Commission states explicitly that it is not responsible for losses before or after an exclusion takes effect.
Is the Gambling Helpline really free and confidential?
Yes. 0800 654 655 and text 8006 are free from any New Zealand phone, available 24 hours, and you do not have to give your name. The service is run by Whakarongorau Aotearoa, New Zealand Telehealth Services, and also provides the freephone line for the Government’s Safer Gambling Aotearoa campaign.
Can I ask my bank to block gambling payments?
New Zealand banks can decline or block gambling merchant transactions on request, and this is worth asking about because it works independently of any casino. It is also the only control that reaches the credit route the incoming regulations will not catch, such as an overdraft, because your bank can see that and the casino cannot.
Clear reviews for New Zealand readers, built from recorded observations and updated when the source or market status changes.
- Evidence before adjectives — each claim is tied to an action, source, date, device, amount or operator reply recorded during the review.
- Four categories kept separate — Player Safety & Trust, Games & Usability, Bonuses & Terms, and Banking & Withdrawals are assessed on their own evidence.
- Honest scores — whole points from 1 to 5 only. When a category was not checked directly, it is marked Not tested.
- New Zealand status checked — access, transitional permission, an application and an issued DIA licence are described as different things.
- Updates stay visible — time-sensitive terms and regulatory claims are checked again, and confirmed errors are corrected.
